CITY OF KENTWOOD
HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
April 20, 2006

Chair Middlewood called the meeting to order at 6:40 p.m.

1. Roll Call:

Members present: Middlewood, Heyboer, Thompson, Pacic, Agostinelli and VanDyke
Boisvenue absent with excuse.
Other present: Robert Kline

2. Approval of Minutes?Motion by Heyboer, supported by VanDyke to approve the minutes of March 16, 2006, with minor corrections. Motion carried.

3. Project Reports:

a. Oral History: Middle wood indicated that Elsie Darling Davis? oral history has been transcribed and is currently being edited. She also confirmed that Martin Hulst did talk about his experiences in the Fire Department in his oral history.

Thompson provided an overview of the recent interview schedule that includes Peter Lachniet. Peter?s son Kenneth would also be present there to assist Thompson as Peter has limited hearing abilities.

Middlewood indicated that VanDyke along with Gerald Oosterhouse helped her with the transcription of the notebook on the Fire department.

Heyboer suggested two oral history subjects: Robert VanderLaan, who lives in Florida most of the times, but comes to the area sometimes; and Bernie Smith?s sister.

b. Heritage Room: Middlewood mentioned the two latest additions to the Heritage Room: the Noorman book and Al Wiersma?s book. When available, Arcadia?s book on Kentwood would be added.

Heyboer mentioned that he has an 8th Grade math book from the old Smith School that could be a good addition to the Heritage Room collection.

c. Barn Survey: No discussions on this matter.

d. Pine Hill Cemetery: No discussions on this matter.

4. Public Awareness

a. Brochure for historic points of interest ? The process regarding the publication of the brochure would be taken up after the Finance Department is done with the budget.

b. The Kentwood History Presentation: Middlewood reported that Boisvenue is still awaiting the CD with the pictures from Kate Prior.

c. Possible Family Album workshop: Middlewood circulated copies of the handouts and fliers for this event. She also provided information on the presenters for that event. At some point of time, there will be a website on the importance of personal history and photo albums.

It was suggested that there be sign up sheet for the visitors who express interest in doing an oral history for our collection.

5. Arcadia Book Project: There would be a book-signing event for the Arcadia book on Kentwood that would coincide with another event: A local Authors Night, to be conducted in the library. That event, currently scheduled for September 7, would be sponsored by KDL Kentwood and Friends of the Library.

6. Heritage room guidelines: Agostinelli revisited the discussion at the last meeting on the guidelines. No other discussion on this matter.

7. Other business/Comments: No other business.

8. Next Meeting? The next meeting will be May18, 2006, at 6:30 PM.


There being no further business before the Commission, a motion was made by Pacic supported by Agostinelli to adjourn

The meeting adjourned at 7:35 p.m.
