1. Approval of Minutes?Motion by Heyboer supported by VanDyke to approve the minutes of January 18, 2007. Motion carried.

2. Project Reports:

a. Oral history: Thompson?s e-mailed report was read. It stated which interviews were recently conducted and the ones that are scheduled. It also mentioned that one of the prospective subjects, Jim Heyboer, did not want to do the oral history interview.

Staff stated that the transcriptionist under contract has indicated that she did not intend to renew the contract after it expires on March 20, 2007. She has started working full time and would not have any time for doing the oral history transcriptions.

Middlewood indicated that she would be in touch with the Michigan Oral History Association to see if they could give contacts for local transcribers that they know of.

b. The Pine Hill Cemetery project: No major updates to report.

c. Barn Survey: Not much was discussed on this matter. The Commissioners who were present at the last meeting did talk about the Barn Video obtained from the Michigan Barn Preservation Network.

d. Heritage Room: Nothing to report.

Staff explained the Commission the arrangement that was discussed with Cheryl Cammenga with respect to keeping the Heritage Room locked. A copy of the key to the room has to be made.

3. Public Awareness

a. The Kentwood History Presentation: Boisvenue was not at the meeting. But his e-mail indicated that he continues to work on the two presentations (one for elementary school students and one for adults).

b. The screening of the DVD prepared by Kelloggsville Students: See note before item# 1.

c. Smith School Display and Loaned Materials: Middlewood and Heyboer mentioned the items that are being considered for display at Smith School. The items include a desk from old Smith School with Jim Weaver?s initials etched on it that was receive from his son, Jim Weaver Jr.; a model of the school building received from Jim Heyboer; an eighth-grade math book that belonged to Tom Walma was received from Shelton Tanja; and a picture of the smith school drawn by Ellen Walma.

Middlewood also indicated that the local Rotary Chapter organizes a fundraiser for the Kentwood Schools, usually in the form of a spaghetti dinner, and Keith VanBeek, the Assistant to the Mayor is actively involved in that. This year, if coordinated properly, that can be held at the Discovery School and can be tied in to a reunion of the old Smith School. The alumni would have an opportunity to talk with each other and also with the current students.

At this time, the first week of May is being considered for the event. Heyboer indicated that it would be challenge to find old Smith School alumni, but can probably be tried. Middlewood indicated that an article can probably be published in the Kentwood Advance and probably the Grand Rapids Press.

Heyboer indicated that he has the names from the last reunion that was planned by Helen Patterson. He also showed a photograph of the last graduating class of the Smith School (1951). Also, it was mentioned that the display should probably be arranged for that reunion. Heyboer estimated that the number of alumni attending would probably be between 10 and 15.

4. VanderLaan Barn Preservation: The barn is still stored on Heyboer?s property. VanDyke shared the photos with the rest of the Commissioners. Staff suggested that VanDyke bring the negatives to the next meeting so that they can be scanned in for archival.

5. Lock on Heritage Room: See 2d.

6. Nomination of Dale Heyboer for the ?Citizen Award?: Staff indicated that all the supporting information was put together by Middlewood. Staff printed the photos and included them in the packet that was submitted. A copy of the entire submittal would be provided to Heyboer.

Other business/Comments: No other business to discuss.

There being no further business before the Commission, a motion was made by Pacic supported by VanDyke to adjourn.

The meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Debargha Sengupta,
Planning Staff.
